Re a comment

Okay folks I received a comment yesterday from someone concerned that I put Maddies picture, name and a school address up as they were worried that something could happen to her with that information being posted.

I understand the anonymous persons intentions. Although saying I wasn't being very smart hurt a bit. I am going to assume though that the person who wrote that does not read my blog normally and address that issue.

I discussed wether or not to post that information with my husband other family members and several people in town. The thing is I really don't have anything to fear that someone could use that information to get to her. In previous entry's I've noted that were we moved to in Alaska is an Island. First there are only 2 ways off or on the Island, boat or plane and to fly you have to take a boat. Honestly this is not an easy place to get to or cheap. Secondly really its a small town even though it is called a city and a very small school less then 200 kids and about 60 families there are 3 elemetary schools we are out of town though. Everyone already knows everyone and I pick the kids up and take them to school everyday. If I lived anywhere else like in the lower 48 or maybe Anchorage which is bigger I may have done things differently but really I don't feel any concern. The next closest island is a bit away from here and its even smaller then we are. So if you are worried that I posted this information trust me. It was well thought out I did think smart actually its not the school address just the mailing address which is public knowledge and if I had posted a picture of the kids on their first day of school in front of the building someone could look it up easy. Also finding your way around here isn't easy unless you know the place and where we live is even more difficult. Also Madison? Uhm she doesn't go or do anything she doesn't want to and she is almost irritatingly vocal sometimes. She is also the type of kid who is in the middle of everything. all. the. time. usually because she started something.

So please don't be worried she is extremely safe, the only thing she needs to watch for around here is bears and we take many precautions for that. I don't know if some will consider me being naive but really I'm not. I did a lot of searching into wether we moved into a safe town before we lived here so I'm very comfortable with it.

Terri- I think that what you did is fine. In other circumstances, it might not be the best idea, but as you have made us all aware, this is a safe area for you. someone would have to be intentionally looking for Maddie to get to her-- and that wouldn't have anything to do with the blog.

I know that you and Kelly thought about what you were doing and made an informed and positive decision.

You've obviously given this decision a lot of thought...I hope Maddie gets lots of cards.

I posted a card today. I know there are a lot of nutters out there but you've obviously weighed things up and the advantages come out on top with no risk because of the community you live in.

I've been concerned about this very issue lately, myself.

I came across a blog where the owner posted some concerns about the safety of the internet...and it got me to worrying that maybe I've put too much personal information on my blog.

These days you can never be too safe - but considering you are on an island up in Alaksa - you might be okay....I'd be more worried about the bears.

You are in a rare situation where it isn't dangerous to post your information the way in which you did. Or I should say isn't AS dangerous. Though really? I'm pretty sure most people could really find most bloggers if they tried hard enough. It wouldn't be that hard. And someone determined to get to you (or your family) would do it without you posting the mailing address of her her school.

I think in your blog, in the instance you chose to do it, with the circumstances you're in? This is not a STUPID idea at all.

I love the way people will judge and jump to conclusions on a single action. I think the not smart one was the one assuming you posted that information in an idiotic manner or without thinking it through.

Some people don't think before they post (like whomever suggested you weren't smart) some people do think before they post (like you! who's even wise enough to talk it over with her husband like she should! wow! two adults in agreement on their child? no one else's business!)

I'm sure the person meant well but sometimes, ya know, people don't think.

Obviously I'm not thinking. Or thinking too much. This comment is a novel. Sorry.

I once posted a photo of Emma's naked bum and a good friend of mine gave me crap for that. It's a naked bum, for chrissakes!!

So, yeah. Everyone has their issues. But yours is well thought out, and you're no idiot.

Our letter to Maddie with the postcards is already on the way to her...I hope she receive a lot of postcards ;O)!

Terri- I think that what you did is good. But I would exchange the school address with your e-mail address because that´s more secure.Who likes to know the address must write a e-mail to you.I know you can never be too safe. And stupid and terrible persons you find worldwide.

I think the anonymous commenter had a legitimate concern- maybe he/she should have worded the comment a little differently. But, obviously you and Kelly thought it through before you made a decision and decided that based on your circumstances it would be okay to do it.

Just mailed my card!

I hope Maddie gets plenty of cards. It sure sounds like she will. I'll do my best to send one, too. :)

This is a very rational--not inflammatory--response. I like how well reaosoned your thoughts are!

I know you're a good mom. When I saw the address, I did freak for just a moment, and then I remembered that you aren't exactly easy to get to, LOL. I think it was OK. I also like Steffi's idea of having people email you.

I hope she gets lots of cards!

I do understand the anonymous person's concern. I didn't read it so maybe he/she probably should've worded it differently. I am glad you explined it more on this post for those weirdos out there who don't have good intentions. :-) I hate it when people make comments without thinking about it first - I once saw a comment on a video of Ava I posted on You Tube that was just so offensive. Now I worry whether I should do a comment moderation on my blog.

I hope Maddie gets lots of cards and I hope you guys are enjoying Alaska!

I think you did a good job of thinking things through, and it seems quite safe. I read your post the other day about the post card and thought it is a good idea, but I am so bad a mailing things, I thought I would fail at the assignment. I will try to send a post card. I have one in the house from our trip, but it is going to the post office that gets in the way of getting it done in time. If I do send one, I will come back and let you know. In the mean time, my well wishes are with Madison in her new school.

I checked out the new digs below. It looks like a great place to live. Beautiful view, but not sure I would be fond of the stairs. You will be fit though. Glad you are ironing our the new home things. I will be visiting again.
